There were two books published that Gilbert Spencer wrote.
‘Memoirs of a Painter’ was published in 1974 by Chatto & Windus is the autobiography of Gilbert Spencer. It contains insights into what it must have been like to be a Spencer as well as providing the most complete and detailed record of his professional development as an artist. This book is currently out of print, but older copies can be found in local libraries as well as online through Amazon bookshop.
‘Stanley Spencer by his brother Gilbert’ is a personal account of the life of Stanley Spencer as told by his brother. When it was first published it provided fresh insights on Stanley as an artist, and also provided some wonderful anecdotal stories that shared the unique closeness and relationship of the brothers.
